Age Certificates

Hi!

Age certificates are carefully studied ratings that are given to films, music videos and much more to ensure that the content of what is being viewed has a warning for people about to watch. This is important for the viewers to know this as they may be too young to view the content. For example, an age certificate of 18 could include content with an explicit sexual, violent, drug abusing nature which wouldn't be suitable for people of younger ages to view. Anybody younger that watches the material could be affected by it mentally as they might have been too young to understand right and wrong and start acting out what they see. This is why in cinema’s anybody younger than the age rating is not allowed to see the film and they are turned away.

A PG rated film might include little swearing but it would only be used in a non-violent or threatening way. If it was then the film would be passed to a higher category. There is little reference to sex and drugs and therefore people watching this won’t be influenced by any actions acted out by characters in the film.

A 12 rated film might include little strong language and non-graphic violence. Furthermore there are more puns on swearing rather than saying the words out loud giving the audience the satisfaction that they know what the characters were trying to say but saying it in a less rude and funnier way.

An 18 rated film might include strong language, portrayals of a sexual nature, string blood and gore, real sex and discriminatory language or behaviour.

We believed that using BBFC’s (British Board of Film Classification) of determining age certificates we could accurately suggest an age certificate for our film. We thought that our film should be a 15 as it will include strong violence, strong language, drug taking and tension throughout the film. If our film wasn’t rated highly enough, then younger viewers could watch it and find it distressing which reflects badly on us. From our research we realised that our audience was going to be from ages 15 to 25 as we believe they would be the most likely people to watch action films.
