When it came
down to brainstorming different ideas that we could potentially use for our
film opening, we struggled as a group. The immediate aim for our group was that
we wanted to be different; we wanted to show an alternative opening film than
most people do (horror). Although we wanted to display an unconventional
opening that not many people had done before, we still wanted to assess the
possibility of doing a horror.
So firstly
we looked at the quirky and different genres we could perhaps use for our
opening film. We narrowed it down to either tragedy or action as an alternative
to horror. We researched tragedy films such as Titanic in order to get an idea
of what we would need to create if we wanted to produce a strong tragedy
opening scene. However we decided against the tragedy genre. This was mainly
because we felt that as we were all boys we’d prefer to work with a genre that
we’re all fans of and would hopefully therefore be more motivated and have
better ideas of how to create a top grade opening credits. So as a result of
this we moved on to taking a closer look at the action genre. We researched a
few films which included; Robocop, Die Hard and The Terminator. All 3 of the
films were mentioned in our documentary that can be seen on my blog. We really
felt that action was going to be a challenge as we wouldn’t be working with the
same types of budgets that Hollywood directors were able to use for the most
critically acclaimed action films, however we felt that we could still produce an
interesting and unique take on the action genre.
As well as
deciding on the genre that we would use, we also needed to decide upon a
general idea for our film. We drew a blank in this department and made the
foolish mistake of not even brainstorming ideas! Therefore we went for a fairly
simple idea that was related to a previous video we had shot. Our shot tracking
video named “The Mugging” was left on somewhat of a cliff-hanger so we decided
to finish this ongoing story. It was a simple idea to just shoot a revenge tale
in which the character who gets mugged in the original can get their own back
on the muggers. Although it was not the most innovative idea, we were happy
with the potential of what we could do with it and how we could link it in with
the action genre that we have already chosen.
See you soon!
